Fall Workshops! - Vermont Surface Design

Silk Painting With and A Without Resist
Sat - Sun, 10/19 - 10/20:  9:30 - 4:30

Beautiful watercolor textures appear on silk by applying alcohol, salt or sugar to wet painted dye.  We'll use French dyes especially suited to silk painting, and introduce a non-toxic washable resist that allows for a range of design opportunities, from delicate outlined images to free abstract forms.  Then it's on to thickened dye and "stop flow" for even more possibilities!  You'll take away at least one beautiful scarf, and a myriad of samples and techniques for future enjoyment.   These will make beautiful Christmas gifts!

Quick Fabric Dyeing with Low Immersion
Compression Dyeing, Tray Dyeing, and Microwave Dyeing
Sat - Sun, 11/9  -  11/10:  9:30 - 4:30
In this workshop we'll produce colorful surfaces for quilting, wall pieces, embellishment, and art clothing with easy to use fiber-reactive dyes and quick techniques. Your results will always be one of a kind, and the textures and patterns  resemble the lovely hand-dyed Balinese fabrics we've seen in recent years.  This is a class for beginners just learning about fabric dyeing, as well as experienced fabric artists wanting to hone in on low immersion techniques for their emerging ideas.  We will be dyeing both cotton and silk.

Printing on with Thermofax Screens
Sat - Sun, 11/16 - 11/17:  9:30 - 4:30
Burning designs onto riso film with a thermofax machine creates long-lasting screens that print finely detailed images on fabric (and paper). With our thermafax machine and laser printer you will produce up to five screens generated from your own designs.  Copies from natural objects such as leaves, buds, grasses, etc. will be included in the design process.   For an additional application, we'll learn to make a stencil with fusible interfacing.  Thickened fiber-reactive dyes and textile paints will provide a wide range of color choices.  These techniques make wonderful printed imagery for layering on white or hand-dyed fabrics and t-shirts.  They transfer easily to paper and mixed media projects as well.  Bring your own visual inspiration and a desire to play.

New SDA Member, Wylie Sofia Garcia, has shared some really exciting news for this fall!

In her series, The Dress That Makes The Woman, Garcia intended to embark upon a ritualized creative challenge: to wear and to work daily on a dress for one month at a time for an entire year. With this project came a year of love, loss, struggle and couture –the honest mess of one woman’s daily life. (Read more about the project on her blog at this link)

Congratulations, Wylie!
