Vermont Surface Design - Workshops with Pippa Drew

Pippa Drew of Vermont Surface Design in Post Mills, VT is offering some great workshops in her state-of-the-art studio. Classes are small with a maximum of 5 people. Lots of space and a beautiful environment!

To register, please contact her at:
You can also see samples in the textile gallery on her website.

April 19 - 20, SAT. & SUN. 9:30 - 4:30,  $225 plus materials fee

A workshop exploring the exciting effects that result from painting dyes directly on cotton.  Dye is applied in various thicknesses, on both wet and dry fabric, to produce fine lines or color gradations, soft or hard edges, outlined or solid forms.  Using brushes, extruders, rollers, block prints, and found objects we'll experiment with pattern, mark, texture and color layering to create original designs on cloth.  Students will take home a painted sarong and cotton shirt.  These techniques produce wonderful fabrics for quilting, fine art clothing, wall art, and transfer well to paper.

May 17, SAT.  9:30 - 4:30,   $115 plus materials fee

Create beautiful papers for collage, mixed media, and for the sheer joy of designing with multiple techniques.  We'll produce a variety of patterned and layered papers using surface design methods usually applied to fabric.  Explore stenciling and watercolor effects with water-based inks and dyes, discharge, batik, and shibori to create depth and pattern on paper surfaces.  Carved blocks and thermofax screens will be available to enrich designs with imagery and additional textures.

June 7 - 8,  SAT. & SUN. 9:30 - 4:30,  $225 plus materials fee

Burning designs onto riso film with a thermofax machine creates
long lasting screens that print finely detailed images on fabric.  With our thermafax machine and ink jet printer you can produce screens from your own black and white designs or from ink-jet copies of leaves, buds, grasses, etc.  Printing these images with thickened fiber-reactive dyes yields wonderful color imagery for layering on white or hand-dyed fabrics and t-shirts.  These techniques also transfer well to paper and mixed media projects.  Bring your own visual inspiration and a desire to play.  Students can create projects on yardage, sarongs, scarves, and shirts.

July 12 - 13, SAT. & SUN. 9:30 - 4:30,  $225 plus materials fee

Fold and clamp shibori generates beautiful symmetries on cloth and also provides an opportunity to explore color theory through transparent dyes in the over dyeing process.  Using a variety of blocks in different sizes and shapes for resist, we'll learn the basics of fold and clamp, along with dye recipes to help predict for hue and value.  Dye applications will include immersion, dipping, hand painting, and microwave dyeing (silk only).  Students will go home with 3 silk (cotton) scarves.

Two Days $225 plus supply fee  - TBA November 2014

Printing with found objects, carved rubber blocks and improvised stencils we'll explore spontaneous way to create a variety of surfaces on fabric. Design and carve your your own blocks, cut or tear temporary masks for a silk-screen, and experiment with patterns from ordinary household utensils.  We'll be printing with versatile water soluble textile pigments that clean up and mix easily and yield a full spectrum of shades and hues on cotton yardage or clothing.

Two Days $225 plus supply fee - TBA November 2014

In this workshop we'll produce colorful surfaces for quilting, wall pieces, embellishment, and art clothing with easy to use fiber-reactive dyes and quick low immersion dye techniques.  Your results will always be one of a kind, with gorgeous textures and patterns.  This class provides a strong technical foundation for beginners just learning to dye fabric, and an opportunity for the experienced dyer wanting to hone in on low immersion techniques for emerging ideas.
